Sevgili Koç Üniversiteliler,

Geleneksel Rektörlük Ofisi aylık bültenlerinden biraz daha farklı olarak bu ay yeni Akademik Dönem ile Üniversitemizin doğum gününün aynı zamana denk gelmesi vesilesi ile sizlere sesleniyoruz.

Bugün Üniversitemizin kurucusu Merhum Vehbi Koç'un keskin zekâsı ve müthiş ileri görüşlülüğünün eseri olan Üniversitemizin kuruluşunun 28. Yılını kutluyoruz. Üniversitemiz bu olağanüstü yolculuğa 4 Ekim 1993'te Vehbi Koç'un verdiği "ilk ders" ile adım atmıştı.

Öncelikle “Ne kadar çok kaliteli insan yetiştirebilirsek, memlekete o nispette hizmet etmiş olacağız” inancıyla, bir üniversite kurmanın ülkemize ve insanlığa sağlayacağı en yüce faydayı bizlere armağan eden Sayın Vehbi Koç’a ve 28 yıl boyunca bizi yalnız bırakmayan, kesintisiz, kapsamlı ve cömert maddi ve manevi desteğini her zaman hissettiğimiz Vehbi Koç Vakfı’na ve Koç Ailesine, tüm Koç Üniversitesi ailesi adına minnet ve teşekkürlerimizi sunarız.

Vehbi Koç, Üniversitemizin vizyonunu şu sözleri ile belirlemişti: “Hedefimiz, gayemiz en iyi şekilde model olacak bir üniversite kurmak ve o üniversiteden mezun olan gençlerin parmakla gösterilmesidir. Nasıl ABD’de Harvard, Columbia gibi büyük üniversitelerden mezun olanlar biliniyor, buradan mezunlar da öyle olsun istiyorum.” 28 yıl sonra bu isteğinin hiç kuşkusuz gerçekleştiğini Mütevelli Heyet Başkanımız Prof. Dr. Nur Yalman sizlerle yakın bir zamanda paylaştığı mesajında çok anlamlı bir şekilde söylemişti: “Üniversitemiz dünyanın en saygın akademik kuruluşları arasında haklı bir yer edindi; ismi Caltech ve École Normale Supérieure gibi efsanevi üniversiteler ile birlikte anılıyor.”

30. senemize çok yaklaşmışken, şimdiye kadar yaptıklarımızdan gurur duymalı ve ileriye büyük bir heyecan ve enerji ile bakmalıyız. Abraham Lincoln'ün çok yerinde bir şekilde ifade ettiği gibi, "Sonuçta, önemli olan hayatınızdaki yıllar değil, o yılların içindeki hayatınızdır." Üniversite olarak olağanüstü gelişmelerin eşiğindeyiz ve eğitimde ve bilimsel araştırmalarda mükemmelliğe doğru emin adımlarla yürüyüşümüz önümüzdeki birkaç yıl içinde daha da hızlanacaktır. Kurumumuz 10 yıl içinde ülkemizde ve bölgemizdeki en iyi “Araştırma Üniversitesi” olarak nasıl ki son derece hızlı geliştiyse, önümüzdeki 10 yıl için vizyonumuz da şu an bulunduğumuz noktadan bir başka büyük sıçramayı barındırıyor. COVID-19 ve COVID-19 sonrası 2021-2022 darboğaz yıllarından geçtikten sonra, Üniversitemizin akademik kadrosunun kritik alanlarda ilerlemesi için önümüzde önemli fırsatlar olmasını bekliyor, büyük ölçüde araştırma çalışmalarımızı ve çıktılarımızı geliştirmeyi hedefliyoruz. Bu nedenle, bu nadide kurumdaki tüm birimlerimiz tarafından üstlenilen akademik ve idari girişimlerin bileşimi sayesinde güçlü adımlarla yolumuza devam ediyoruz.

Yıldönümleri genellikle başlangıçların ve mutlu anların hatırlanıp kutlandığı zamanlar olduğu için bu vesile ile Üniversitemizin geleceği için çok umutlu olduğumuzu belirtmek isteriz. Birer Koç Üniversiteli olarak, bugüne kadar hep birlikte gerçekleştirdiklerimizden gurur, bundan sonra yapacaklarımız için de büyük heyecan duyuyoruz.

Dear Members of the Koç University Community,

We stray a bit from our usual monthly Message from the Office of the President this September as the birthday of our great institution and the start of our school year are back-to-back and we thought this happy coincidence warrants a slightly different approach to our traditional Newsletter.

Today, we celebrate the 28^th anniversary of the founding of our university as a result of the brilliant foresight of the late Vehbi Koç, signified by his ‘opening lecture’ delivered on October 4^th, 1993.

We take this opportunity to express our wholehearted gratitude to Vehbi Koç, who bestowed upon our country and the world at large this great institution, driven by his deep held belief that “The more we educate quality people, the more we serve our country”. On behalf of all of you, we express our deeply held appreciation and thanks to the Vehbi Koç Foundation, and the Koç family, for their generous, unrelenting and extensive support of our university for the past 28 years.

Vehbi Koç expressed his vision for our University when he stated: “I want everyone to look at Koç University graduates and hold them up to the highest standards while looking up to them and deem them as leaders of our tomorrows. I want our graduates to be regarded like those who graduated from universities such as Harvard and Columbia in the US . . .” 28 years later, we can without a doubt say that his wish has come true, as eloquently stated by our Chairman of the Board, Prof. Nur Yalman in a recent message to our community: “Our University has a rightful place among the most respected academic institutions in the world today and its name is associated with universities such as Caltech and École normale supérieure.”

As we inch closer to our third decade, we have many things to be proud of and look forward to ... As very aptly expressed by Abraham Lincoln, "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.", we are in the cusp of extraordinary developments and our fast march towards excellence in education and scientific research may only accelerate in the next few years. Just as our institution developed extremely rapidly during the past decade to emerge as the best ‘Research University’ in our country and region, our vision for the next decade for Koç University harbors yet another giant leap from where we are now. Once we go through the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 bottleneck years of 2021-2022, we expect to have substantial opportunities in front of us to enhance the size and composition of our faculty in critical areas, while at the same time greatly enhancing our research portfolio and output. We thus continue aggressively on this exciting path, with a combination of academic and administrative initiatives undertaken with enhanced collaboration among all of our units across this great institution.

Since anniversaries are usually celebrations of beginnings and births, we take this opportunity and be hopeful for the future of this great institution. As members of our community, we are truly proud of our achievements so far and greatly excited about the heights that we are yet to climb and the challenges we are to overcome in the coming years.
